Construction industry veteran dies

Posted online

George Innes Jr., who spent more than five decades working in the Springfield-area construction industry, died Aug. 24, a day before his 83rd birthday.

Innes was known as the longtime general manager of Springfield Ready Mix Co. until his 2005 retirement and was called “Mr. Membership” for his service to the Springfield Contractors Association, according to information provided by the trade organization.

At the Salute to Design and Construction Awards Banquet last year, Innes was among five attendees honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for their overall contribution to the industry. The SCA also pointed out Innes was a “founding father” of the Salute to Design and Construction Awards Banquet.

Prior to joining Springfield Ready Mix, Innes began his career in a venture with his brother-in-law, Jim Masters, with Masters Jackson Paving Co. He worked as vice president of the company in Springfield and Joplin, according to his obituary posted at GormanScharpf.com.

Innes also was involved in charitable organizations, including Boys and Girls Clubs of Springfield, Women in Need, the YMCA and the Abou Ben Adhem Shriners.

A memorial service is scheduled today at King’s Way United Methodist Church, 2401 S. Lone Pine Ave., followed by a visitation reception at the Shrine Mosque, 601 St. Louis St., according to the obituary.
