Construction industry vet dies

Chester “Kit” Carson, a veteran in the local construction industry for decades, died yesterday. He was 75.

A funeral service for the Carson-Mitchell Inc. co-owner is scheduled to be held Feb. 18 at First & Calvary Presbyterian Christian Church, 820 E. Cherry St., said company CEO Jason Carson. Kit is survived by three children and 10 grandchildren, Jason said.

Jason declined to disclose the cause of his uncle Kit's death.

"He successfully ran Carson-Mitchell for many years as president," Jason said, noting Kit's son Chris now holds that position. "His current position was chairman of the board. He was a very good structural engineer."

Declining to disclose Kit's ownership stake in the company, Jason said the chairman position will be left unfilled for now.

Kit Carson, along with his brothers Jim and Doug, came on board during the late 1960s and early ‘70s, after their father Chester Carson founded Carson-Mitchell in 1946 with partner Larry Mitchell. Kit, James, Doug, Jason and Chris Carson were listed as company owners in a Business Spotlight article published by Springfield Business Journal in June 2018.

Jason and Chris, who began working full-time at Carson-Mitchell in 2001, took over leadership of the company in May 2018. The elder Carsons became board members through the change.

Last year, Jim and Kit Carson received Lifetime Achievement Award honors from the Salute to Design and Construction Council.

Carson-Mitchell provides general contractor, design builder, crane rental and rigging services.
