The city of Springfield issued a request for qualifications to architecture firms for four fire station projects.
The RFQ seeks architects to design two new buildings: Fire Station No. 13 in the 1900 block of College Street in the West Central neighborhood and Fire Station No. 14 at the northeast corner of Chestnut Expressway and Duke Avenue. The other two projects would replace existing fire stations at 2423 N. Delaware Ave., known as Fire Station No. 4, and 2129 E. Sunshine St., known as Fire Station No. 7, according to a news release.
“I am very excited about building two new fire stations in underserved areas of Springfield, both of which have high fire risk,” Springfield Fire Department Chief David Pennington said in the release. “These new stations will reduce the amount of travel time for our fire crews to reach emergencies in these areas."
City spokeswoman Melissa Haase said costs will be estimated when a firm is hired.
The fire stations are funded through the November 2017 renewal by voters of the city’s level property tax. The tax generates $8.5 million annually for capital projects via 27 cents per $100 of assessed value on property owned in the city, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
Through the RFQ process, the submittal deadline is March 1. A selection committee will then conduct interviews and select the top firm on May 3. A design contract is slated to be issued on June 28, according to the release.
