BKD expands reach in Texas via acquisition

Posted online

BKD LLP bought a Texas-based company to gain more market share in its southern region.

The Springfield-based public accounting firm brought on Rylander, Clay & Opitz LLP, effective June 1. The financial terms of the deal were not included in a news release.

“With the addition of RCO, BKD will fulfill our strategic vision of having a presence in Fort Worth, the 16th largest city in the U.S.,” said Tom Watson, BKD’s Dallas, Fort Worth and Waco managing partner, in the release. “The combination capitalizes on RCO’s deep roots in the Fort Worth market and BKD’s wide range of audit and advisory services that RCO’s clients can now access.”

Rob Opitz, Rylander, Clay & Opitz’s managing partner, stayed on to lead BKD’s newest office in Fort Worth. His team joins BKD’s 2,650 employees and 280 partners. BKD Chief Marketing Officer Gregory Cole said two partners and 35 staff members from Rylander, Clay & Opitz joined BKD.

“We’re happy to be joining BKD and are excited to bring enhanced career opportunities for our professionals and greater access to services for our clients,” Opitz said in the release.

The acquisition brings BKD’s office count to 37 in 16 states. The company reported fiscal 2018 revenue of roughly $600 million. BKD also operates Texas offices in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Waco.

In 2017, BKD maintained its No. 12 rating for the fourth year in a row on Inside Public Accounting’s list of the top U.S. firms. The rating was based on BKD’s 2016 revenue of $564.4 million. BKD also ranked first on Springfield Business Journal’s 2017 list of the area’s largest certified public accounting firms, with 138 local CPAs.
