A week after New York City local news providers DNAinfo and Gothamist celebrated their decision to join a union, their billionaire owner has decided to shut them down.
“DNAinfo is, at the end of the day, a business, and businesses need to be economically successful if they are to endure,” said owner Joe Ricketts, the billionaire founder of TD Ameritrade.
His decision puts 115 journalists out of work. That includes employees at the New York office that voted to unionize, as well as those in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington that did not.
