Askinosie Chocolate pulls in foodie award

Posted online
Springfield-based Askinosie Chocolate has been named a silver finalist for the 2012 Sofi Awards, which recognize specialty food and beverages nationwide.

Askinosie's Dark Milk Chocolate + Black Licorice CollaBARation Bar is among four chocolates in the running to win a gold award for the chocolate category. Winners will be announced during a June 18 ceremony in Washington, D.C., according to a news release.

Askinosie's chocolate bar is among 126 silver finalists selected in 32 categories, narrowed down from roughly 2,589 products.

The dark chocolate and black licorice bar, launched in October, was created in a partnership with Stockholm, Sweden-based licorice maker Lakritsfabriken. The bar comprises 62 percent dark milk chocolate blended with goat's milk powder, organic cane sugar and Fleur de Sel sea salt, and it is topped with anise seed and Lakritsfabriken salted licorice, the release said.

Askinosie now has won five silver Sofi awards, but the company has not been named a gold winner, said Askinosie spokeswoman Bethany Parry.
