‘African Queen’ broker says no offers, contracts yet

The exclusive brokerage working with the owner of the “African Queen” this morning said there’s no contract or offers on the southeast Springfield residence, countering the homeowner’s statement yesterday to Springfield Business Journal.

“I would be the first to know,” said Dave Sekunda, managing broker and owner of HouseKey Real Estate LLC.

He said this morning the 2829 S. Lone Pine Ave. home is on the market at $2.49 million. The listing for the two-bedroom, 3,125-square-foot home is active on HouseKey’s website.

“I can assure you there is no offer on the property at this juncture,” Sekunda said. “Legally speaking, we are the listing brokerage, we have the listing agreement on it. We do not have a contract on it.”

Homeowner Michael Willhoit previously told SBJ the home was under contract for $3.75 million with an “out-of-town buyer” he declined to name. When reached this morning, he said there’s no sales contract on the home but indicated there is an interested party.

The African Queen had been listed for as much as $8.9 million, but legal notices this week stated it’s headed for a foreclosure sale Nov. 13. According to a notice in the Oct. 30 edition of legal-notices publication The Daily Events, the foreclosure is tied to a deed of trust for the home that was issued in May 2017 to Willhoit by Freedom Bank of Southern Missouri, according to a Greene County recorder filing. The note amount is $875,000, according to The Daily Events.

Willhoit also faces state and federal tax liens. Public records show he and Linda Willhoit in October were issued an individual state lien of $47,952 and a federal lien of $176,463. Michael Willhoit previously told SBJ the liens would be paid at the closing of the home sale.

The luxury home has a 650-pound mounted lion and other taxidermic animals, a man-made lake and waterfall, and numerous African artifacts, among other features. Willhoit, who also owns luxury car seller Willhoit Enterprises LLC, in February was featured in an article by The Wall Street Journal about his attempts to sell the house on eBay.
