2017 40 Under 40 Honoree: Meggan Capps, 36

Posted online
Tokyo, San Francisco and New York City – these are the stops Meggan Capps made before returning to the Springfield area. She rose up the ranks at the YMCA, broke client-conversion records for Update Inc. staffing in NYC and produced millions in revenue for a Silicon Valley firm. The latest venture is her own startup, Alterna Legal, to provide on-demand legal services staffing.

A self-described disruptor, she’s also convincing and got her first client in New York to join Alterna Legal as CEO. When not hustling down new business, you might find her running. But ask her, and she’ll tell you she hates to run. Next, she’s pursuing a master’s degree in legal studies at Washington University.

What was your first job? Teller at Central Bank of Lebanon

What is your theme song? “Unstoppable,” by Sia.  I listen to it every morning when I start my run.

What was your professional “aha” moment? When I closed my first deal with a New York City client. I finally realized that I could intelligently tell my story and people listened. I was deathly afraid they thought I was an unintelligent farm girl, but I’m told I came across as genuine and trustworthy.

What’s your most treasured possession? My wine cellar

What did you learn the hard way? I will fail spectacularly and repeatedly, and taking it personally only makes it worse. Also, I have an ugly cry face.
