2017 40 Under 40 Honoree: Anjee Davis, 39

Posted online
Anjee Davis leads a nationwide nonprofit from downtown Springfield. A native of the community, she also was the impetus behind its September move from Alexandria, Virginia. Though the office was close to legislators in Washington, D.C., Davis felt a move to the Ozarks would lower Fight Colorectal Cancer’s expenses and allow more funds to be used for advocacy on behalf of colorectal cancer patients. Prior to joining Fight CRC, Davis fundraised for the University of South Carolina’s Center for Colon Cancer Research. The funding to increase screening rates in the state rose from $35,000 in the first year to more than $1 million in the fifth.

What was your first job? I was a cashier at a go-cart track in Branson.

What do you miss most about the 1990s? I never gave it up. I still wear a G-Shock watch.

What about your job would shock clients? Each month I spend an average of 2,000 minutes or 30 hours on my cell phone.

What was your professional “aha” moment? I realized being small doesn’t have to limit your ability to make a large impact. We created our flagship social media campaign, One Million Strong, emphasizing strength and community. Last year we reached over 82 million social media engagements during March Colorectal Cancer Awareness month.

What did you learn the hard way? Emails are not private. My rule of thumb now is if I am not comfortable with an email message being forwarded, I pick up the phone.
