2017 40 Under 40 Honoree: Amanda Dumey, 32

Posted online
Amanda Dumey exemplifies the nobility that can exist in the legal profession. Her practice is dedicated almost entirely to representing women, men and children in civil orders of protection. Dumey sees her work with Legal Services of Southern Missouri as an opportunity to help clients stand up to their abusers and start on a path to a better life. She shows leadership in her strong work ethic and by setting the standard for quality and compassionate legal help. Dumey volunteers her time as a board member of Southern Missouri Lawyers and Habitat for Humanity of Springfield and as vice chairwoman of Missouri Bar’s Access to Justice Committee.

What was your first job? Lifeguard and swim lesson instructor at Jackson City Pool

What do you miss most about the 1990s? The Macarena and disposable cameras

What about your job would shock clients? Even though lawyers fight with one another in court, we actually are friends in real life – mostly.

What was your professional “aha” moment? I have always dreaded going to interviews because I dislike talking about myself and giving canned answers that I know are not true for me but the employer wants to hear. However, when I interviewed for my first job with Legal Services, it was easy to talk about why I wanted the job and why I felt I was qualified. I knew then that I was in the right place for me.

Have you ever met a celebrity? I took a selfie with Bill Clinton last year.
