Sinquefield sets record with $1M donation to potential 2016 candidate

Billionaire political activist Rex Sinquefield voiced his support for Bev Randles as Missouri lieutenant governor with a $1 million check.

Randles, a Kansas City attorney and chairwoman of the Missouri Club for Growth, established an exploratory committee for the statewide position Monday. St. Louis Public Radio reports Sinquefield’s contribution is the largest single donation to a candidate in Missouri history.

Incumbent Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, now in his third term, has yet to disclose his 2016 plans, the radio station said.

Sinquefield’s signature has been on other political contributions for the 2016 ballot. He’s bankrolling former House Speaker Catherine Hanaway’s GOP bid for governor to the tune of $860,000 so far.

In response to Sinquefield’s sizable donations, U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskil criticized his efforts.

“The question Missourians really need to ask is this – do they really want a government completely owned by one St. Louis billionaire?” the democratic McCaskill said in a news release.
