Wall Street Journal: Crystal Bridges to unveil underappreciated artists show

Posted online
The Wall Street Journal wants its readers to know the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art will soon launch an exhibit that is drawing the attention of curators, collectors and critics from across the country.

On. Sept. 13, the free museum in Bentonville, Ark. – built largely with funds from the Wal-Mart Family Foundation – is unveiling “State of the Art: Discovering American Art Now.” The exhibit features a selection of 227 works by 102 artists believed to have been overlooked or underappreciated by major contemporary museums and galleries.

In November, the president and assistant curator of Crystal Bridges began looking for art that filled three criteria: virtuosity, engagement and appeal. Together, they traveled more than 100,000 miles to find the exhibit’s pieces, making studio visits to almost 1,000 artists.
