2014 Men of the Year Honoree: Tony Shalloup

Posted online
Tony Shalloup builds connections. Whether as director of community relations at City Utilities, vice president of community banking at Regions Bank or director of business development at The Whitlock Co. – his current role – Shalloup brokers bonds.

“Relationship development has been part of my repertoire since I began working,” he says. “Once you understand a person’s viewpoint and are sensitive to their perception of a situation, an agreement is much more attainable to reach a mutual goal.”

After an introduction to computer systems while in the U.S. Air Force, Shalloup spent the next several decades in the field, beginning a long stint at City Utilities in systems management.

“I was a proud member of the team that evaluated and implemented fiber optics at City Utilities,” says Shalloup, who has a bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University and a master’s degree from Drury University. “This is one of many projects that were developed during my tenure at the utilities. I am very happy to see the results of this technology improve faster and more efficient communications for business and City Utilities’ daily operations.”

After almost 25 years, Shalloup moved over to community relations for CU, which he represented at the American Public Power Association Business and Finance Section as both a member and chairman. While at CU, he focused on cultivating an environment of improvement.

“I made training and new opportunities (available) for my employees so they could grow and be successful. I believe it is very important to nurture and be a mentor to people I work with and provide honest feedback on their performance,” says Shalloup, who also has participated in a mentoring program for undergraduate and graduate students at Drury.

At Regions Bank, Shalloup managed relationships for municipalities, county governments, school districts, universities and manufacturing before moving to The Whitlock Co., where he grows business and coaches and mentors across the accounting firm.

Shalloup served on the board and as president of Springfield’s Best and has been a member and committee chairperson of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce since 1989.

“I am always available to assist business owners to connect to another business,” he says. “Business to business is very necessary for the growth and success of a company and our community.”

Shalloup’s community involvement is just as committed.

As former board member and president of the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools, he helped further the organization’s mission of partnering with local businesses to fill funding gaps for the district. He has served on the board, including as president, of the North Springfield Betterment Foundation and has been a member of the Downtown Springfield Association and the Urban Neighborhoods Alliance Advisory Board.

Shalloup also is proud to be associated with Honor Flight of the Ozarks, of which he was a board member. The free flights flew more than 1,200 area World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to see their memorial during a three-year period.

His contributions haven’t gone unnoticed.

Shalloup was honored as an outstanding volunteer for Developmental Center of the Ozarks in 2007; received the Service to Mankind Award from the Springfield Sertoma Club in 2007; and was a Gift of Time nominee in 2005.[[In-content Ad]]
