Celebrate the achievements of these men

Posted online
When Springfield Business Journal recognizes individuals, honoree profiles are largely built off the recipients’ applications. We usually ask two or three additional questions, and just for fun, we like to throw in an off-the-wall question.

For the 2012 class of Men of the Year, we decided to ask each honoree to think back to boyhood and share with us his early career aspirations. As you’ll see from the profiles that follow, the answers are varied, and sometimes, humorous. In a few cases, some of these men grew up to do exactly what he wanted to do, while others have embarked on career journeys they’d never imagined.

Representing career fields such as accounting, law, health care, banking, education, construction and the nonprofit sector, these men have far-reaching influence on the business community of Springfield and southwest Missouri.

As you will read, each of these men – even those whose professional journeys took unexpected paths – has found ways to excel in their work and in their community.

An independent panel of judges helped choose the 2012 Men of the Year recipients, who on their applications answered questions about leadership, their professional accomplishments, influence on others and civic involvement. It’s clear from these pages why this group stood out to the judges. The 2012 Men of the Year honorees are a busy but compassionate group, pushing not only for professional excellence but also making time to lend their efforts to a long list of community groups in support of causes such as historic preservation, access to medical care, the arts and education.

Civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

When it comes to facing challenges, including economic pressures, opposition for expanding services for the poor, advocating for change within their respective industries or achieving work-life balance, we think you’ll agree that the 2012 class of Men of the Year measures up well.

Please join me and the entire staff of SBJ in celebrating the achievements of the Men of the Year. And remember, it’s not too early to start thinking about next year. If you know of a man who should be considered for the 2013 class, nominate today at SBJ.net/nominate.
