2011 Men of the Year Honoree: Dr. Michael Hoeman

Posted online
As a physician in Springfield since 1983, Dr. Michael Hoeman keeps up with a demanding internal medicine practice at The Diagnostic Clinic at CoxHealth.

While he’s one of many doctors in the Ozarks, his dedication to the community helps him stand out, says Jim Anderson, a fellow Men of the Year honoree and president of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

“In this day and age, it is very difficult and unusual to find a medical professional willing to commit his or her time to the community,” Anderson says. “He truly serves as a role model in our medical community regarding civic involvement.”

In 2002, Hoeman was elected to the Springfield R-XII Board of Education, for which his service ended this year. He served as board president 2004–07.

“As an elected leader of a public institution such as the Springfield R-XII School District, I have been directly involved in decisions that have shaped, in large ways and small, the direction and character of public education in our community,” he says.

During his time as school board president, Hoeman helped lead the transition when Superintendent Norm Ridder – a fellow Men of the Year honoree – joined the district in 2005. Hoeman also was president in 2006, when voters passed a $96 million bond issue.

“I worked very hard on the development of that issue, and at the time, it was the largest school bond issue ever passed in our state,” Hoeman says.

Since 1991, he has served on the board of directors of Intermed Insurance Co., and he has held several roles with the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce serving on the board of directors, most recently 2004–07.

Hoeman, who earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine, also is active in his chosen field. He serves on the board of governors for the University of Missouri School of Medicine Alumni Association and has been involved with the county, state and national medical associations.

“On a statewide level, I have worked through the Missouri State Medical Association to help secure the passage of medical liability reform,” he says.

Hoeman says in any setting, as a leader, he works to establish rapport with others who are involved to establish priorities and set goals.

“As these goals are pursued, a leader must utilize the capabilities of the group members while assuring that each member is invested in the success of the endeavor,” Hoeman says. “Success can then be viewed as a collective accomplishment rather than a series of individual achievements.”
