2010 Most Influential Women Honoree: Dr. M. Nanette Crighton

Posted online
Dr. M. Nanette Crighton often ends up in charge without intentionally seeking a position of leadership. Her big-picture thinking, endearing qualities and willingness to set an example simply compel others to follow.

“I can delegate tasks making people feel empowered rather than imposed upon,” says Crighton, the medical director and owner of Crighton Aesthetic Studio. “I make a point to recognize contributions by others in a genuine way, and I make certain that I do my share of the least favorable job.”

Crighton earned her medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Medical School, and prior to opening her own studio, she spent 10 years with Cox Medical Centers where she worked as a staff anesthesiologist and served as the chief of the department of anesthesiology 1986–87.

“I put aside the comfort of anesthesiology, my specialty as a physician, and opened my own studio knowing that I could be of value and immense help to others in the community while utilizing my knowledge and training as a physician,” Crighton says.

In addition to her solo practice in aesthetic medicine, Crighton is a partner in an online business that focuses on weight loss.

“Both of these businesses have one goal in mind: to help people feel good about themselves as well as improve their health,” Crighton adds. “Every day I watch clients establish a higher level of self-esteem. They walk a little bit taller; they carry their heads a bit higher. They are my crowning glory and proudest accomplishment.”

Crighton’s talents extend beyond the medical profession to her passion for performing arts. She and her daughter have supported Springfield Little Theatre since 1998, both monetarily and physically on and off the stage. The two of them have been involved in more than 14 productions. Crighton also has taken part in two productions of Springfield Regional Opera and participated in activities of the Vandivort Center Theatre.

Crighton’s many contributions to the community also include service to her church, where she spent a term on the board, served as a deacon, was a member of the choir and continues to sing for cantatas, solos and special musical performances. Crighton is an avid supporter of Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. Other organizations she supports include the American Heart Association, various cancer drives, the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of America.

Crighton, who is a mother, wife, physician, entrepreneur, performer and community volunteer, says her most familiar role has been in the encouragement of others.

“I have had the privilege to touch the lives of several individuals, and I believe that they are now mentally stronger, more positive, more self-assured and content through interaction with me,” she says.

Crighton makes every effort to practice what she preaches by applying the philosophies she has built her civic and professional career around to her own life and relationships.

“My approach to encouragement follows the same lines as the rules I try to live by: Do not judge, be honest, have compassion, be thankful, find something to be happy about and love even when it hurts,” she says.[[In-content Ad]]
