A 100.2-carat, emerald-cut diamond sold Tuesday for a little over $22 million during Sotheby’s New York Magnificent Jewels sale.
The buyer of the diamond was not named. The jewel, graded D-Color and Internally Flawless, is one of five similar diamonds larger than 100 carats to be sold at auction, and the largest ever to be offered in an emerald-cut.
The De Beers Group of Companies mined the original rough, weighing more than 200 carats, in southern Africa. It took more than a year to study, cut and polish into the gem that was auctioned, according to Forbes.
Sales of the Sotheby’s auction that included colored diamonds and gems totaled almost $65.1 million.
