Minnesota governor orders umlauts' return

Posted online
Two small dots can mean a lot for a town, especially a town known as America’s little Sweden.

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton signed an executive order mandating the state's Department of Transportation return umlauts to city-limit signs in Lindström.

USA Today reports, the umlaut – or the two dots above the letter “o” – were removed following the most recent U.S. Census and the transportation department omitted the umlaut on the city's name because of the Federal Highway Administration's 52-page document of regulations known as Standard Alphabets for Traffic Control Devices.

Residents have been up in arms ever since as people continually pronounce the town’s name wrong.  You pronounce the city as LIND-strum with the umlaut and LIND-stroom without.

"Nonsensical rules like this are exactly why people get frustrated with government," Dayton told USA Today.
