Founding Whitlock Co. partner dies

Posted online
A founding partner of The Whitlock Co., who last year split off to form his own firm, died yesterday. Elmer Selim was 76.

Selim's wife, Dawn Selim, said he was the sole employee of his independent practice, Elmer C. Selim CPA, CVA LLC, which is closing. She declined to disclose his cause of death, but said he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

"He was very influential. It was an honor to be his wife," she said.

Elmer Selim co-founded accounting firm The Whitlock Co. in 1985 with Barney Whitlock and David Keehn. The firm operated as Whitlock, Selim & Keehn LLP until The Whitlock Co. moniker was adopted in 2008. Selim stepped down as partner in 2003, but continued to work at the firm until last year, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

“Elmer had the finest analytical mind I have ever known. He was very good at his job and very good with clients. Elmer consistently placed the interest of the firm above his own, making him a great team player and the best partner you could ever have,” Whitlock said in a news release issued this morning.

In August 2013, Selim launched his independent practice at 600 W. Republic Road, Suite A-112. The firm specialized in valuation and litigation support services. Last year, Selim told SBJ the split was largely to break a perception issue, because attorneys and clients might perceive a conflict of interest since he was working at the largely accounting Whitlock Co.[[In-content Ad]]
