O'Reilly Automotive settles sexual harassment suit

Posted online
Springfield-based O'Reilly Automotive Inc. (Nasdaq: ORLY) agreed to pay $35,000 to settle a case of sexual harassment at one of its Chicago stores after a lawsuit was filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The EEOC alleged O'Reilly Automovie was slow to respond when a male employee at a south-side Chicago accused a female store manager of sexual harassment. The alleged harassment included groping and sexually offensive comments, according to an EEOC news release.

In its lawsuit filed Aug. 28, the EEOC alleged O'Reilly did not promptly or adequately respond to the employee's sexual harassment complaints. The agreement between O'Reilly and the EEOC was signed Sept. 3 and provided to counsel last week.

"Early resolution of employment discrimination litigation virtually always makes sense - for the employer, for the employee for the EEOC and, importantly, for the public interest," said John Hendrickson, the EEOC's regional attorney in Chicago, in the release. "So we are very positive about the entry of this consent decree. We're optimistic not only because the involved employee is going to be fairly compensated, but also because the remedial injunctive measures put in place are going to improve the working environment for all O'Reilly employees."

In the agreement, the $35,000 will be paid to the employee as monetary relief, and O'Reilly will be required to report to the EEOC over the next two years all employee complaints of sexual harassment in the south-side Chicago-area district, according to the release.[[In-content Ad]]
