Employers add 209K jobs in July

While employers added 209,000 jobs in July, the U.S. unemployment rate moved up a tenth of a point to 6.2 percent from June.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics today reported July job gains in the professional and business services, manufacturing, retail trade and construction industries, according to a news release.

Professional and business services added 47,000 jobs last month, bringing its total gains over the past 12 months to 648,000.

Manufacturers employed 28,000 new people in July, 15,000 of which were in motor vehicles and parts. Another 3,000 jobs were added in furniture and related products, according to the release.

Employment in the retail trade industry rose by 27,000 jobs. Automobile dealers, food and beverage stores and general merchandise stores aided the push.

Construction employers increased jobs by 27,000, with notable gains in residential building and residential specialty trade contractors, according to the release.

The number of unemployed in the nation - roughly 9.7 million - was flat in July.

Employees working part-time for economic reasons, aka involuntary part-time workers, was flat at 7.5 million, according to the release.

Another 2.2 million were marginally attached to the labor force, meaning they were not employed but were available for work and had looked for a job in the last year, according to the BLS.[[In-content Ad]]
