Drury names three finalists for president's post

Drury University on Sept. 24 named the three finalists vying for the center city school's top post.

The 17th president of the university will succeed Todd Parnell, who in August 2011 announced his intention to retire from the position, effective May 2013 .

The finalists are:
  • David Manuel, chancellor and a professor of economics at Louisiana State University-Alexandria, La.
  • David McInally, executive vice president and treasurer at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.; and
  • David Steele, dean of the college of business at San Jose State University in California.
"We had 65 very strong candidates when we started this process," said James Bone, chairman of Drury's presidential search committee and a member of the university's board of trustees. He declined to say whether any of the candidates were from Drury or the Springfield area.

Bone said the candidates will make multiday campus visits beginning Sept. 29, when they will meet with students, staff, faculty, alumni and Springfield business and community leaders. After the completion of on-campus interviews, the search committee will recommend a candidate to the university's board of trustees, who will vote during an Oct. 24 meeting. Bone said it is premature to speculate when the school's next president will be named.

Parnell, who served as interim president of Drury after the May 2007 resignation of John Sellars, was selected to fill the position permanently in January 2008. Parnell, who had been tapped as the executive director of the school's Edward Jones Center for Entrepreneurship, was a career banker, including roles as president of Truman Bank in Clayton and as the founding CEO of The Bank, which later merged with The Signature Bank, now part of BancorpSouth, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

When he retires in May, Parnell will be 65 and will have served as president of Drury for six academic years.[[In-content Ad]]
