City Utilities warns of scam

Posted online
City Utilities of Springfield issued a warning Friday of a scam targeting its customers.

According to a news release from the utility provider, several customers reported calls by someone identifying themselves as a CU employee. In these phone calls, the scammer asks for credit card information to make a payment on the customer's account or risk having their utilities shut off.

CU, however, contends it does not handle payments in this way. CU reminds customers its technicians do not request, or accept, payments in the field and CU staff members carry CU-issued identifications, with field staff wearing uniforms.

According to the release, customers can call (417) 863-9000 to report suspicious activity or inquire about their account.[[In-content Ad]]
