Grant aids state efforts to help jobless

Posted online
Missouri has been approved for a $592,000 U.S. Department of Labor grant to help the state's unemployed workers.

The Missouri Department of Economic Development's Division of Workforce Development will work with the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations to implement the grant and provide enhanced services for laid-off workers statewide. Those services, to be delivered through Missouri Career Centers, will include in-person assessments and individual job-search plans, according to a news release.

While the grant will serve all job seekers, it is particularly aimed at helping those who are receiving unemployment insurance benefits to access the most appropriate career assistance.

The grant funds supplement a current statewide strategy to re-employ workers receiving unemployment insurance. On July 1, the first of 60 temporary workers began serving at Career Centers across the state. Those positions are being funded with money from the federal stimulus act, the release said.[[In-content Ad]]For more news about work-force development in southwest Missouri, see the Aug. 10 edition of Springfield Business Journal, featuring In Focus: Work Force Development.
