DoubleTree by Hilton Springfield has created an unparalleled sustainability program that has earned a national Environmental CARE award. CARE, which means Creating a Rewarding Experience, is the heart of the Hilton brand and involves team members working together to deliver a world-class experience while looking for ways to continually improve offerings and enhance guest service.

The drive to increase sustainability led to DoubleTree’s development of a Green Team, consisting of 10 staff members who meet to evaluate existing programs and brainstorm new ideas. So far the team has implemented a recycling program in the hotel and guest rooms, they have given each employee a reusable coffee mug – saving about 60,000 disposable cups a year; they have established an Aquanomic program in housekeeping, saving the hotel 90,000 gallons of water a month; they began participating in Clean the World, donating all unused soaps, shampoos and conditioners to people in need; and they regularly participate in green initiatives throughout the community.

“We are passionate about sustainability,” DoubleTree General Manager Brian Inman said. “We are always looking for new and innovative ways to go green, and even with a 30 year old building, we are having an impact. Our team members are excited and they know that together all of our small actions make a huge difference.”

The CARE initiative has expanded beyond the hotels and on a national level over the past ten years, DoubleTree by Hilton has helped mentor more than five million grade school students in more than 200 cities worldwide as part of Teaching Kids to CARE. Inspired by that success, DoubleTree Springfield took their CARE initiative to Robberson Elementary. To tie in with their environmental focus their mascot, Mr. O’Greeny, helped put together a sustainability program and they started a gardening club. The DoubleTree team also hosted a drive to collect school supplies, coats and new shoes.

The efforts at Robberson Elementary got noticed, and DoubleTree was awarded the DoubleTree by Hilton Crystal Cookie Award to honor their ongoing efforts their Teaching Kids to CARE program. The Crystal Cookie Awards are presented to the hotels that best exhibit the DoubleTree by Hilton CARE culture through outreach efforts, both as a hotel and as individuals, to the local community. In both 2012 and 2013, DoubleTree in Springfield was one of only five DoubleTree hotels in the world to win the award, and it celebrates their extraordinary commitment to the CARE culture at Robberson Elementary and in the greater Springfield community, at the hotel with their guests, and with fellow team members.

“We love helping take care of our environment and neighborhood school. And most importantly, we love working together to make a positive impact,” Inman concluded. “We truly believe in giving back, and our team is excited to be able to make a difference.”
