If consolidation of Evangel University, Central Bible College and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary is approved by the Higher Learning Commission, Vanguard University President Carol Taylor is slated to become president-elect of Evangel.

Taylor, a 1973 Evangel graduate, would succeed Robert Spence, who plans to retire at the end of his current term in April 2014 after four decades with the Springfield school.

In an open letter to its community, Vanguard Board of Trustees Chairman David Oddo said Taylor would conclude her duties as the Costa Mesa, Calif.-based university's president in June this year.

He cited a statement from the Evangel, CBC and AGTS Transitional Board of Trustees, which says a presidential search committee to replace Spence had commenced amid consolidation talks and ultimately selected Taylor.

Evangel spokesman Paul Logsdon said officials from the three schools met Thursday. He confirmed that Taylor would become president-elect upon approval of the consolidation.

"If the HLC approves the application for the change of control, a public media presentation will be planned," Logsdon said, reading a prepared statement.

If Taylor becomes president of Evangel, she would be its fourth leader and first female president.

The Assemblies of God General Council voted in August 2011 to merge Evangel, CBC and AGTS into one entity known as Evangel University. A decision from the North Central Association’s Higher Learning Commission is pending. Logsdon said the Assemblies of God is hoping the commission will make a decision in April, or during a later meeting in June.

In 2009, Taylor became the first woman to lead the Assemblies of God-owned school in Orange County. She joined the private university in August 2007 as provost and vice president of academic affairs, according to Vanguard.edu.
