Diversity is on the rise in the greater Springfield area, and the demand for interpreters, translators and language instruction services by area organizations and businesses of every size is on the rise as well. Meeting that need is where Will Crites with Everything Español comes in. With a B.A. in Spanish, a B.A. in education, and an M.A. in bilingual education, Crites offers one-time and ongoing interpreting services, as well as an array of instruction options.
“There’s definitely been an increase in the need for Spanish-language interpreting and
instruction, and it’s refreshing to see such a variety of businesses committed to helping bridge the language gap,” Crites said. “I’ve seen this in hospitals, courts, schools, insurance agencies, you name it, the language barrier can come up just about anywhere.”
As more and more local businesses want to reach out and be able to say “Se habla español” in their advertising materials, Crites is standing by to help them meet that promise. “I want to help any business increase its success and provide better customer service, whether that’s on a regular or as-needed basis.”
“If a business is looking for interpreting services, I think it’s important to recognize the benefit of utilizing a professional, objective interpreter, rather than family members or friends,” Crites added. “When it comes to confidentiality, vocabulary, and the overall effectiveness of the communication, accuracy is key and mistakes can be costly.”
Crites got his start while still in college working with a migrant public health program in Wyoming. He went on to interpret a Wyoming state Supreme Court case and through the next decade focused his work in the field of higher education administration working with international students. While he continued to do freelance interpreting jobs during that time, it wasn’t until he moved to Springfield that he began to pursue more regular work in the Spanish language field.
Whether it’s telling a woman that her ultrasound shows she’ll be having a baby boy, or watching a counseling client have a breakthrough in understanding the root of a problem, or even having a group of professional travelers connect with their fellow businesspeople in a new country, Crites feels privileged to help bridge the gap between languages.
“I’ve studied and worked in different countries and have definitely experienced being out of place and the difficulty of language barriers myself,” Crites says. “I’ve been lucky enough to have had a huge variety of interpreting experience, which makes it easy to adapt to different situations.”
As the population in the Springfield area continues to diversify, Crites will be busy helping businesses bridge the language gap. And as a result, he will be helping build a stronger community along the way.[[In-content Ad]]
