The department received several awards during Kinney’s tenure, including the 2000 National Gold Medal Award from the National Recreation and Park Association. Kinney served as the Amateur Softball Association’s Missouri State Commissioner for 20 years and helped organize the Greater Springfield Area Sports Commission. In 2006, Kinney was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2010, he was named to Missouri Park and Recreation Association’s Hall of Fame.
