The Cake Pop Co. LLC

Deb Lumos launched The Cake Pop Co. LLC on May 11. A cake pop is a small piece of cake placed on a stick and coated in candy to resemble a lollipop. Lumos, who completed cake-decorating courses through Wilton Industries at Hobby Lobby, started making cake pops to supplement her family's income after a job loss. When the pops gained popularity among family and friends, Lumos formed the company and began making them using her friend's commercial kitchen at Café Whistle Stop. Lumos estimates that startup costs were $3,000. According to www.cakepopco.com, pops are available for $21 per dozen, plus shipping, in six cake flavors, eight candy colors and five candy flavors. Larger orders have special pricing, Lumos said. Lumos ships nationally but only on Mondays and Tuesdays to ensure quality. Cake pops also are available locally at Rendezvous Coffee Lounge and 1984 Arcade. Phone: (417) 849-3009.

The restaurant also features a collection of Missouri State University sports memorabilia once owned by athletic director Bill Rowe.
