Auditing firm lays out risk factors for Springfield

Posted online
Representatives from the city of Springfield's hired third-party auditing firm met with City Council members this week to set a three-year plan and lay out potential risk factors.

On Oct. 20, council's financial and administration committee approved the audit plan presented by St. Louis-based certified public accounting and business consulting firm RubinBrown LLP, according to a news release.

As part of the plan, RubinBrown will perform up to four department and process-related audits starting immediately. The plan named several risk areas, including:
  • payroll and cash disbursements;
  • procurement cards;
  • Public Works operations and technology controls;
  • Parks Department operational reviews and purchasing mechanisms;
  • disbursement of private information at the Busch Municipal Building's cashier lobby; and
  • the municipal court's account reconciliations.
The audit results are slated to be released to the public via SpringfieldMo.gov.

“Internal audits provide important information to the city’s leadership team, as well as accountability to the taxpayers,” City Manager Greg Burris said in the release. “RubinBrown has an impressive list of both public and private sector clients and a deep bench of staff members with a broad range of expertise.”

The city will pay RubinBrown $93,000 annually to fill the role left vacant by Kristy Bork, who left her job as internal auditor for a position with the Springfield-Branson National Airport, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.[[In-content Ad]]
