Mo. retains No. 1 spot on gas price list

Posted online
Missouri's gas average fell 9.5 cents during the past week to $2.79 per gallon yesterday, keeping the Show-Me State at the No. 1 spot on GasBuddy.com's list of the lowest gas averages in the nation.

The state's average dropped another 2 cents this morning, besting No. 2 South Carolina, which had an average of $2.87 per gallon, and No. 3 Oklahoma, also at $2.87 per gallon. Hawaii bottomed out the list with its $4.07 per gallon average this morning.

Including last week's decrease, Missouri experienced a 34.4-cent month-to-month decrease and a 26.7-cent year-to-year drop. The national average, which decreased 6.1 cents during the past week to $3.12 per gallon on Sunday, dropped 22.9 cents during the past month and 23.1 cents during the past year, according to a news release.

Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy's senior petroleum analyst, said lower costs could be attributed to a price war between some members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and jitters about the state of the global economy.

"The national average stands now at its lowest point since January 18, 2011, and by the end of this week, it could stand at its lowest since late 2010," DeHaan said in the release. "Every day, Americans are spending over $100 million less on their gasoline purchases than they did a year ago, some of which will be injected back into the economy in other forms, and with the economic concerns taking shape lately, it could help jolt things back in the right direction."

In Missouri, the lowest price of gas this morning was $2.46 per gallon, available at nine stations in Union. The highest price was $4, selling at a station in Osage Beach, according to MissouriGasPrices.com.

In Springfield, the 3660 E. Sunshine location of Sam's Club was selling gas at $2.62 per gallon. The other Sam's Club, 745 W. El Camino Alto Drive, priced gas at $2.64 per gallon, while other stations in the Queen City ranged from $2.65 to $2.69 per gallon.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil was trading at $82.75 per barrel as of 9:38 a.m. Light sweet crude oil futures for November were trading at $82.08 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.[[In-content Ad]]
