City fills vacant auditor role with St. Louis firm

Posted online
After more than a year without an internal audit, the city of Springfield hired a St. Louis firm for the job in the wake of a staff departure.

Certified public accounting and business consulting firm RubinBrown LLP will perform internal audit functions beginning immediately. The move comes after internal auditor Kristy Bork left the city more than a year ago for a position with the Springfield-Branson National Airport, according to a news release.

City spokeswoman Cora Scott said the service will cost Springfield $93,000 annually. The city will use money from the unfilled position to fund the work.

According to the release, representatives from the firm’s St. Louis office will perform three to four departmental audits each year, starting in October. RubinBrown will identify risks based on input from management and city council’s Finance and Administration Committee. From this analysis, the firm will develop a three- to five-year internal audit plan to present for the committee’s approval.

“Internal audits provide important information to the city’s leadership team, as well as accountability to the taxpayers,” said City Manager Greg Burris, in the release. “RubinBrown has an impressive list of both public and private sector clients and a deep bench of staff members with a broad range of expertise. We look forward to working with them.”

All audits will be announced publicly and posted to SpringfieldMo.gov, city officials said.
