SPS hires Jungmann for top job

Posted online
The Springfield Public Schools Board of Education yesterday voted unanimously to approve the hiring of John Jungmann as the next superintendent of the district.

Jungmann, who will assume the position July 1, is expected to earn a compensation package valued at roughly $250,000. His employment contract should be finalized by the end of this week, according to a news release.

Jungmann currently leads the 11,500-student Liberty Public Schools district near Kansas City. He will replace Norm Ridder, who is resigning from the SPS superintendent role this summer after nine years on the job.

The Liberty superintendent, a native of southwest Missouri, visited Springfield Monday to tour the district and speak with stakeholders.

"Following Jungmann's community visit Monday, we listened to the feedback we received and agreed that he is the right candidate at the right time to move Springfield Public Schools to the next level of excellence," school board President Kris Callen said in the release. "As the largest fully accredited school district in the state and the fifth largest employer in Springfield, this job brings with it a unique set of responsibilities and challenges. We are confident that Jungmann will not only meet those expectations, but exceed them."

Jungmann was selected from 13 initial applicants. Other finalists for the job have not been disclosed.

Last August, Ridder informed the school board he would end his tenure on June 30. In November, the board hired superintendent search firm McPherson & Jacobson to help find a successor, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
