Missouri unemployment rate falls for 5th straight month

Posted online
The Show-Me State’s unemployment rate dipped by a tenth of a point to 4.1 percent in February.

The improvement marked the fifth-straight month-to-month decrease, according to a Missouri Department of Economic Development news release. The seasonally adjusted jobless rate began declining in October.

Last month, Missouri’s nonfarm payroll total inched up to 2.88 million from 2.87 million jobs in January. Leading industries included leisure and hospitality, at 5,400 jobs, and mining, logging and construction, at 2,500. Offsetting industries included manufacturing, which lost 2,100 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilities, which dipped by 2,000.

The most recent unemployment rate for the five-county Springfield metropolitan statistical area was 3.8 percent in January. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data is not seasonally adjusted.
