The Show-Me State’s private business sector grew last year both in the number of employers and the amount of workers, according to the Missouri Department of Economic Development.

“More and more companies and entrepreneurs are seeing the many benefits of starting or growing their business in Missouri,” DED Director Mike Downing said in a news release, citing low taxes, business incentives and high quality of life.

During 2015, Missouri’s count of private sector employers grew 5 percent to 182,004, up by 8,742 companies from 2014. Also in 2015, 18,342 new businesses formed in the state, representing a 5.7 percent increase from the prior year.

Private-sector businesses last year added 51,798 jobs in Missouri. The most-improved sector was businesses employing 20-49 employees, with 13,224 new jobs. Seventy-seven percent of the state’s private sector employed less than 10 people, and firms employing less than 50 workers made up 95 percent of all private businesses, according to the release.

Last year, the average wage in the private sector was $46,001. Employers with at least 1,000 employees paid the highest wages, at an average of $70,533. Those employing five-nine people paid the least, with an average wage of $36,468, according to the DED report.
