Menards opens in Hollister, mum on Springfield

Posted online
Eau Claire, Wis.-based home improvement retailer Menard Inc. yesterday opened its first of three planned stores in the Springfield area.

Menards spokesman Jeff Abbott confirmed the store opening in Hollister, but referred further questions to General Manager Brian Krysl. Krysl could not be reached for comment by deadline.

The location in Hollister reportedly is a $23 million store, according to Springfield Business Journal archives. The Hollister store on roughly 30 acres was announced in May 2014.

Menards also has put plans in place to open two Queen City stores. Springfield City Council in May 2015 rezoned land northwest of the Sunshine Street and West Bypass intersection for a Menards store. And in August 2014, Menards signed a $4 million contract with Springfield Public Schools to purchase the former Hickory Hills Elementary property at the corner of U.S. Highway 65 and Chestnut Expressway, according to SBJ archives.

“We have nothing to report in regards to Springfield,” Abbott said via email.

Menards, which has been eyeing Springfield for around five years, typically takes 18 months to build its stores.

The next closest Menards store in Missouri is in Lake of the Ozarks, according to the company’s website.
