Hurts Donut Co. on Saturday opened its south-side store in the Gallery Eleven shopping center at the northwest corner of National Avenue and Republic Road.

“It was snowing outside, and there was a long line,” said co-owner Kas Clegg, declining to disclose sales figures but noting steady movement throughout the day.

The 1,600-square-foot shop, 1111 E. Republic Road, employs 62, bringing the company’s Springfield total to nearly 100 between its two Springfield locations. Clegg said the company plans to hire another 10 on the south side, as well.

The Gallery Eleven store caps off a year of movement for the Springfield-based gourmet doughnut company.

Last month, Hurts opened its fourth store in Iowa City, Iowa. In addition to its downtown location - which opened in late 2013 - the company operates stores in Norman, Okla., and Wichita, Kan. Franchise stores in Oklahoma, Texas and Florida also are being considered.

In July, the company moved its downtown store just down the block to a larger space at 320 Park Central West.
