Commerce Bank holds local deposit market share lead

Kansas City-based Commerce Bancshares Inc. (Nasdaq: CBSH) is still king of deposits in the Springfield metropolitan statistical area, according to data released today by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.

The holding company - which operates seven Commerce Bank branches in Springfield - has held the top spot in all but one of the last six years since 2011. Great Southern Bancorp Inc. (Nasdaq: GSBC) regained the No. 1 spot it previously held for nine years in 2012. The Queen City company has ranked second ever since, according to Springfield Business Journal archives. The Springfield MSA comprises Greene, Christian, Dallas, Polk and Webster counties

Commerce had Springfield MSA deposits of $1.22 billion as of June 30, the latest data available. Its market share was 13.53 percent.

Great Southern was close behind with $1.2 billion in deposits, representing a 13.47 percent market share, according to the FDIC.

Central Bank of the Ozarks held its No. 3 position with $1 billion in deposits, or 11.5 percent of the MSA’s market share.

The top three banks hold 38.5 percent of the market’s deposits.

Again in fourth was Springfield’s Guaranty Federal Bancshares Inc. (Nasdaq: GFED), which reported $517.7 million in deposits as of June 30. That’s a 5.7 percent market share.

Bank of America climbed up a slot to rank fifth, pushing Simmons Bank to sixth. Bank of America’s MSA deposits were $422.7 million as of June 30, or 4.7 percent of the market.
