Branson fires city administrator

Posted online
The Branson Board of Aldermen voted to oust nearly four-year City Administrator Bill Malinen.

Malinen’s employment with the city was terminated yesterday. The reasoning behind the action was not included in a news release, and spokeswoman Jennifer Langford did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.

“The board and those of us remaining in city government wish Bill and his family nothing but the best in all of his future business and personal endeavors,” Branson Mayor Karen Best said in the release.

Langford also did not respond to a request for recent board meeting minutes. The Springfield News-Leader reports aldermen voted 3-3 May 9 on the issue and again split the vote May 16, when Best broke the tie in favor of eliminating Malinen’s contract. The board voted Tuesday to let him go the following day.

Branson Police Department Chief Stan Dobbins was selected to fill the city administrator role in an interim capacity as the board searches for a permanent successor to Malinen. Dobbins started as chief last year.

Malinen relocated to Branson in October 2013 after previously working as city manager for the city of Roseville, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. He has over 30 years of city manager experience in rural and suburban developing communities, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.

Since becoming Branson’s city administrator, Malinen has been involved with efforts to conduct an $80 million-$100 million streetscape project to revitalize the city’s 5-mile entertainment district corridor. Including the Highway 76 strip revitalization, Branson has experienced an investment boom comprising some $350 million in projects.

The release also cited Malinen’s “implementation of priority-based budgeting, the hiring of key department head positions and various other public improvements.”
