Posted online
U.S. nonfarm employers added 151,000 jobs in January, causing minor movement in the unemployment rate.

The national jobless rate dropped a tenth of a point to 4.9 percent last month, according to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics news release.

Employment gains were led by retail trade, food services and drinking places, health care and manufacturing.

Retail trade employers increased their payroll ranks by 58,000 positions in January, led by 15,000 jobs in general merchandise stores, according to the release.

In food services and drinking places, employment rose by 47,000 jobs. The industry has risen by 384,000 positions during the past year.

The health care industry’s job ranks moved up by 37,000 in January, with most of the increase in hospitals, at 24,000, according to the release.

Manufacturing employers hired 29,000 people in January, following little change in 2015.

The Springfield metropolitan statistical area’s December unemployment rate was 3.4 percent, below Missouri’s rate of 4 percent that month, according to recent data from the BLS.
