The Mentors Project: Sam Hamra

Posted online
MENTEE
John Hamra, general manager of a Wendy’s restaurant

OBJECTIVE
To be sure that he sets his goals and works hard to achieve them so he will someday be an officer and leader in Hamra Enterprises. He also has a goal to complete his education at Ozarks Technical Community College and eventually receive an undergraduate degree.

HOW
I check his progress on a regular basis with the district manager to see how he is progressing in the job, including improving sales and employee retention. The district manager gives me reports on John’s accomplishments and reviews his accomplishments compared to other managers.

RESULTS
Since John took over the store on June 16, 2014, I’ve seen many positive results. He has embraced the Hamra Charter and has pushed that culture into his store. He believes in fun in the workplace and treats his employees as Hamra family members. This has helped John’s become a Phase I training store.

CHALLENGES
To improve sales in the store, to make sure that his special goals given by the district manager have improved and that the bottom line of the store has improved.

YOUR MENTOR
My father. When I was a young boy in the 1930s, I worked in my father’s clothing store. He gave me tasks to do when I was in early grade school, such as sweeping the floor, opening boxes of clothing, and eventually becoming a salesperson and operating the cash register – all before I was 12 years old. Those early years of his mentoring certainly helped me to work hard.
