The Mentors Project: Matt E. Miller

MENTEE
Kelly Byrne, owner of Say You Can LLC

OBJECTIVE
It goes both ways. It is important to share, and my main objective in mentoring Kelly is to help support him in his endeavors and pass along what knowledge and experience I have gained from my successes and my failures so that he can benefit. But I learn from him as well, and I appreciate his youth, enthusiasm and energy.

HOW
We don’t have a structured process, but we talk pretty regularly to discuss his projects and potential locations, etc., and I invite him to look under the hood at what we’re up to.

RESULTS
Kelly interned at my company several years ago while he was in college and then came to work here for a short stint. Since then, he has started his own real estate development company.

CHALLENGES
Of course he is young, and I’ve been around a bit. I tend to move a little more methodically than he may like at times. And honestly, his stuff often will sometimes drift to the bottom of the pile!

BREAKTHROUGHS
One of the neatest things about the path Kelly has taken is that it’s been pretty steady. People in my business tend to get a win or two under their belts and then get in over their heads (I say that from experience!) but Kelly has steadily grown his reach over the years.
