State sales tax check to Springfield eclipses prior year

The city of Springfield’s 1 percent sales tax check for September from the Missouri Department of Revenue improved 19 percent compared to the same month a year earlier.

The $4.63 million check also was above the city’s projection of $4.6 million for the month, according to a news release.

With the latest tax infusion, Springfield’s year-to-date collections move up to $11.6 million, 8 percent above $10.8 million in September last year. It’s also 6 percent above the city’s projection of $11 million.

The sales tax check represents sales processed by the state in August from transactions made largely in July, according to the release.

Sales tax revenues are the primary source of revenue funding the city’s vital services, including police and fire operations. Roughly 60 percent of the general fund’s revenue comes from sales and use taxes.
