Startup Corner: Charlie Rosenbury, Self Interactive

Minimally viable product …
Providing interactive development services ranging from simple brochure-type websites for local businesses to custom applications for startups on the coasts to short-lived promotional projects for international brands. I also consult with companies on how to best allocate budgets for interactive projects, getting them the most value for their dollars.

Problem solving …
To most business owners, the Internet is a giant question mark. They know it can provide greater opportunity for their business, but have no idea how it works or where to begin. I help break down those unknowns to create the most value. I also provide specialty knowledge and additional manpower for existing development shops with too much work on their hands.

Seed money …
Zero dollars! I initially worked from home using my personal computer and Internet access and eased into having expenses. I’m fortunate to be in a field with hardly any financial barrier to entry.

Hurdles overcome …
Time management. When starting out, the answer to any project opportunity is always yes, which leads to hectic schedules and overlap between commitments. Learning how to balance work between multiple subcontractors and clients required trial by fire in the form of many late nights and weekends.

Next phase …
I’d like to venture into building a marketable product. I’ve been setting aside money to cover wages in order to take a break from client work and focus on building something for myself.

Pivot …
I originally tried to spend as much time being billable (i.e. sitting at my computer) as possible. After getting out to more networking and community events, I quickly learned that value of making new connections pays for time “lost” many times over through better projects and clients.

Biggest mistake …
I would have set aside more personal funds before quitting my job [at 40Digits LLC in December]. Luckily, my wife had just received a bonus and raise at her job, so we were able to get by on those slower first months.

Advice …
Best: “Double your rate.” Worst: “You don’t want to have to wear multiple hats in the business.”

Food for thought …
There’s never going to be a perfect time to quit your job to pursue building your own venture, so prepare as well as you can and take the leap, especially if you are single and only responsible to yourself. And network both inside and outside of your industry.
