Five Pound Apparel LLC

closed Jan. 3 on the purchase of Five Pound Apparel LLC from Bryan Simpson for undisclosed terms. Brina Thomas said she and her husband plan to continue operating Five Pound Apparel’s stores downtown and on the south side in Farmers Park and retain the combined 10 employees. Thomas, a recent Missouri State University graduate who resigned from her role as manager at Ellecor Design & Gifts in Farmers Park, leads the day-to-day operations of Five Pound Apparel. Her husband will continue to work as a bank examiner for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Simpson, who started the company six years ago with his brother Matthew, listed the company for sale in October.

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Discount Tire opened its first Springfield store Dec. 23 at 3670 S. Glenstone Ave. a year after entering the Joplin market. The 925-store, multibillion-dollar chain also operates five stores on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Spokeswoman
said the store south of the Glenstone and Primrose Street intersection employs 11. The land is owned by Discount Tire affiliate Halle Properties LLC. With operations in 32 states, the company in 2016 widened its lead over No. 2 independent tire retailer TBC Retail Group via new store openings, according to TireBusiness.com. Discount Tire posted an estimated $4.2 billion in 2015 sales, according to Forbes. The tire chain sells tires and wheels for a variety of vehicles and sponsors NASCAR and motocross events.
