Missouri attorney general applauds Trump’s EPA order

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley today applauded President Donald Trump’s executive order affecting Show-Me State waterways.

The order signed yesterday directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to immediately review the “waters of the United States” rule. Former Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster sued the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers in June 2015 over the rule changing the definition of waterways under the Clean Water Act. Koster argued the rule issued under President Barack Obama’s administration gave the government increased authority over Missouri land use.

"President Trump's directive comes as a major victory for those of us who have fought this federal overreach onto our states' farms and ranches,” Hawley said in a news release. “I look forward to the full repeal of this illegal rule."

In 2015, Koster said the rule would makes thousands of acres of privately owned land in Missouri subject to federal water regulation. Koster said the rules reclassified waters to include land that is dry most of the year.

According to the release, Hawley campaigned against the “waters of the United States” rule during election season.
