Project description: Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT) spokeswoman Anne Hatfield said the new Neighborhood Market – the company’s sixth in Springfield – would employ up to 95 associates. Construction started in late May on the grocery store designed with a full-service pharmacy and drive-thru. The new market would be the 13th Wal-Mart store in Springfield. The redevelopment of the former Life 360 Church property received organized opposition that started with a petition to repeal City Council’s February 2013 rezoning that forwarded store plans. Council members stood behind their decision, and the city moved to send the issue to voters. However, Life 360 representatives filed a lawsuit against the city, asserting the church would be financially harmed if the approval was reversed. Courts ruled three times in favor of the church, allowing Wal-Mart to proceed with its plans.
