CVB: Street rod event to bring $1.5M economic impact

Posted online
The Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau is predicting an economic impact boon this weekend from the National Street Rod Association’s Mid-America Street Rod Nationals.

Officials estimate attendees will spend $1.5 million and generate some 3,400 room nights at Springfield hotels while in town May 26-28, according to a news release.

“About 5,000 people are expected to be there over the weekend,” CVB President and CEO Tracy Kimberlin said in the release. “This event is great for Springfield because it takes place over Memorial Day weekend, which typically is a slow weekend for the city’s hotels because so many people go to the lakes for the holiday.”

The 34th annual Mid-America Street Rod Nationals at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds will include vehicles on display and a driving event through a twisting course dubbed StreetKahana.

This weekend also marks the return of the community tradition of cruising on Kearney Street.

Officials are scheduled to cut the ribbon on the event at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Kearney Street and Melville Avenue, according to the CVB release.

City Council in April approved the return of Kearney cruising as a pilot program April-October.

Bill sponsor Phyllis Ferguson said at the time street rods coming to Springfield over Memorial Day weekend would carry an economic impact of $2.4 million.
