2015 Trusted Advisers Wealth Manager: Brent Singleton

Posted online

For Brent Singleton, effective financial planning begins with a conversation.

“We start a relationship by asking a lot of questions to understand what is important financially to our clients,” says Singleton, who has worked as a financial planner with Heim, Young & Associates Inc. since 2004. “Our comprehensive approach allows our clients to focus on their businesses and not be concerned about the welfare of their families.”

Singleton considers financial planning his calling, saying he thoroughly enjoys working with individuals and families to help them accomplish their lifelong financial goals.

To accomplish those goals, Singleton utilizes a process that addresses management of investment and risk, as well as retirement, tax, estate and educational planning. His goal is to save taxes, increase investment returns, protect clients from unexpected life events and ensure families maintain the lifestyle they desire in the most efficient financial means possible.

In 2014, Singleton directly managed 250 of the firm’s clients, translating into a collective net worth of roughly $800 million.

In an effort to consistently improve, Singleton attends the Financial Planning Association’s annual conference, which is the company’s primary trade group. But other meetings with investment companies regarding due diligence, based on the company’s business volume, also happen throughout the year.

“It allows me to directly interact with many of the largest investment management teams in the U.S. and gather valuable insight for our clients,” Singleton says.

One of those clients is Michael Miller, former chief financial officer for Associated Electric Cooperative Inc.

After meeting Singleton in a social setting, the duo became further acquainted when Singleton was hired to manage funds for the company’s employee retirement assets.

“He had an excellent grasp of personal financial management and broad knowledge of retirement planning concepts,” Miller says. “He inspired confidence that their funds were in good hands.”

Now retired, Miller continues to trust Singleton – this time, with his personal accounts.

“His deep education in investments, tax, insurance and financial management is now a resource to help me reach my personal life goals,” Miller says.

Singleton’s areas of responsibility and competence go beyond the office. He has served on more than 10 local boards and community organizations since he came to Springfield in 1999, including the Greene County Financial Advisory Board and the Springfield Public School Foundation Advisory Council. Current civic endeavors include serving on the boards of Missouri Elite Futbol Club, the Springfield-Branson National Airport and the Discovery Center of Springfield.
