Natalie Wand of the Wands Jewelry family bought Radford Jewelry last summer and opened Oct. 2 after renovations at 1352 E. Battlefield Road, in the Fremont Center. Wand said she invested $25,000 borrowed from Guaranty Bank for improvements following the self-financed acquisition from Brent Raab for an undisclosed amount. “I worked for my dad the past 10 years,” Wand said, adding she turned Radford into an estate and vintage jewelry boutique. Raab worked with his dad, Kenneth, at Radford Jewelry for 30 years and sold the business upon the unexpected death of his wife, Michelle. Nine months after selling, Brent Raab died April 26, according to his obituary at Legacy.com. As a gemologist, Wand buys and sells jewelry, including on consignment, and appraises and repairs pieces. She re-signed the lease for three years at roughly $1,400 per month with options up to nine years.

Purple Burrito
California-style Mexican chain Purple Burrito opened its fourth restaurant in late March at 603 S. Kimbrough Ave., near Missouri State University. Co-owner
Leo Pelaez signed a year lease for undisclosed terms on Kimbrough – the site of a closed Pasta Express – for 1,280 square feet from building owner Marilyn Sue Starnes-Biggs, said SVN Rankin Co. adviser Lee McClean III, who represented the owner in the transaction. Purple Burrito shares the building with Bull’s Trophy House. The Kimbrough eatery replaced a location at National Avenue and Division Street, where Pelaez said business was slow. He co-owns Purple Burrito with Jose Puente and Juan Lopez. The ownership group also plans to open in Ozark, at 502 N. Third St., most recently occupied by Avocado Mexican restaurant. With the planned opening of the Ozark restaurant in May, the chain would employ over 30 total.

Carefree Living LLC
Longtime handyman
Mark Johnson launched Carefree Living LLC on April 1 to offer residential preventive maintenance geared toward the elderly. For 10 years, Johnson did kitchen and bath remodeling and handyman services as MPJ Enterprises, and he recently quit his day job as a dental equipment technician with Patterson Dental to work his Carefree Living business model. The company offers a 10-point annual maintenance plan from cleaning and checking the HVAC and garage door tune-ups to cleaning gutters and whole-house inspections. “I try to catch stuff at an early stage of failure, before it goes down and causes a really expensive repair,” he said. Johnson, who works with a handful of subcontractors, charges about $1,500 a year for the maintenance plan on a 3,000-square-foot home.
